El Archivo General de Indias de Sevilla es uno de los centros documentales más importantes del mundo para el estudio de la historia de España y su relación con América y Asia. Fue creado en 1785 por orden del rey Carlos III con el objetivo de reunir en un solo lugar toda la documentación relativa a los territorios ultramarinos, que hasta entonces estaba dispersa en diferentes archivos. El edificio que lo alberga, la antigua Lonja de Mercaderes, es una obra renacentista diseñada por Juan de Herrera en el siglo XVI.

En su interior se conserva una enorme cantidad de documentos que permiten reconstruir la historia del Imperio español desde el siglo XVI hasta el XIX. El archivo alberga decenas de miles de legajos, millones de páginas y miles de mapas y planos, incluyendo escritos de figuras como Cristóbal Colón o documentos administrativos clave de la colonización. Estos fondos proceden de instituciones como el Consejo de Indias o la Casa de la Contratación, responsables de la gestión de los territorios de ultramar.

Además de su valor histórico, el Archivo de Indias tiene un gran reconocimiento internacional. En 1987 fue declarado Patrimonio de la Humanidad por la UNESCO junto con la Catedral y el Alcázar de Sevilla, destacando tanto la importancia de su contenido como la belleza de su arquitectura. Hoy en día, continúa siendo un centro activo de investigación histórica, con parte de sus documentos digitalizados y accesibles para investigadores de todo el mundo.

The Archivo General de Indias in Seville is one of the most important documentary centers in the world for studying the history of Spain and its relations with the Americas and Asia. It was created in 1785 by order of King Carlos III to centralize all documents related to Spain’s overseas territories, which had previously been scattered across different archives. The building that houses it, the former Merchants’ Exchange, is a Renaissance structure designed by Juan de Herrera in the 16th century.

Inside, it preserves an vast collection of documents that allow historians to reconstruct the history of the Spanish Empire from the 16th to the 19th century. The archive contains tens of thousands of files, millions of pages, and thousands of maps and plans, including writings by figures such as Christopher Columbus and key administrative records of colonization. These materials come from institutions like the Council of the Indies and the House of Trade, which managed Spain’s overseas territories.

Beyond its historical value, the Archive of the Indies has significant international recognition.
